Poetry, politics, but no party!

Oxgangs Library was going to have a 20th birthday party this week but the weather put paid to that. Still, there’s been no shortage of goings on at the library recently:

Last Friday we hosted BBC Radio Scotland’s Big Debate. Host Brian Taylor and his  guests (Robin Harper MSP, Margo MacDonald MSP, Joy Hendry of Chapman magazine and David McLetchie MSP) fielded questions from an enthusiastic and knowledgable audience. Here they are:

We also held a poetry competition for the primary schools in the area, asking P5/6 children to write about ‘home’.  Local poet Ryan Van Winkle ran some workshops to help inspire ideas (and noisy and inventive they were).

Wiktoria Apanasiewicz of St Mark’s Primary School, Evan Protheroe of Pentland Primary School and Abbie Patterson of Oxgangs Primary School captured first, second and third places respectively.

And to get the children’s efforts seen by everyone in the area, we’re publishing them as posters, so the poems can be displayed in local shops and public spaces.

Here’s to the next 20 years!
